Australian electric vehicle sales by month and by model in 2024
The Driven publishes detailed sales data for Australian passenger electric vehicle sales on this page.
Data is sourced from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) report known as VFacts, the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), as well as individual companies.
This page will be updated as new data is released each month, and as new information comes to hand. It is designed to be a reference point for the industry and consumers alike.
The table below tracks the monthly volume of each passenger electric vehicle model currently sold in Australia. Missing data in some rows or cells indicates that we are waiting for information from those respective manufacturers, usually for electric vehicles that have an equivalent internal combustion engine (ICE) variant of the same model.
Some manufacturers have told us they will not provide EV specific breakdowns of these models beyond what is available in the VFacts report, so certain data will remain missing unless we can find an alternative source.
For more details on individual EV models available in Australia, please visit our EV Models page. And for handy tips on the EV experience, please check out our EV Explainers section and our section on Road Trips and Reviews.
Tim has 20 years experience in the IT industry including 14 years as a network engineer and site reliability engineer at Google Australia. He is an EV and renewable energy enthusiast who is most passionate about helping people understand and adopt these technologies.
There is no doubt in my investor mind – gungy sticky (idiot Arab driven) fossil fuels are dead dead dead. The battery is THE tech of the 21st century -and Christ we are only 20 or so years truly into it thus far. Just wait!
The fossil fuel people have bought Trump, so he’s their man. He’ll turn back the EV revolution if he can.
But I’m a Never Trump Guy.
Trump stumped his first election on the promise to save the coal industry only so see it crash even further. He is only a man, this EV, Renewables “thing” is far too big even for him. He4 might keep the Chinese out for a couple of years but Tesla will continue to grow as more and more people wake up to the idiocy of fossil fuels. They were good in their time, but now it is time for EVs and renewables…bye bye Big Oil.
Musk ‘interviews’ Trump shortly. Seriously?https://www.politico.eu/article/donald-trump-announce-major-interview-elon-musk/
Dts can be fixed
I was an outright Trump hater as well however when you dig deeper US politics is just a cesspit of misinformation. Biden is owned by a bunch of energy and other corporations and has approved many new fossil projects to keep their support. Remember Harris has been in power for 4 years and talks about what she’s gonna do not what she’s done. Politics is the art of promising, not delivering.i also believe Musk is with Trump because the Democrats have systematically tried and failed to marginalise Tesla, Remember Biden got into bed with the auto unions and would not even speak the word Tesla while praising Mary Bara at GM for “leading the EV revolution”.
Just avoid the the danger of becoming a cult member. Stay rational.
If you own a electric car you have become a cult member
Nah. If you own an electric car you have saved yourself a flipping huge amount of operational cost —cost which comes part and parcel of owning a ‘traditional’ noisy, inefficient fossil fueled costly sh*tbox
The most valuable thing we can ever have is time and just think of all the time plugging is saves, or not needing to get an oil change saves, or brake jobs, or tuneups, or exhaust system replacements etc. etc. Yes, more and more of us know the benefits of EVs are substantial and only getting better…compared to ICEs.
Oil change 15 minutes, what tune up as that disappeared 40 years ago.Evs use tyres more than my petrol car
Not wanting to be deliberately contrarian Tom, but in my experience, my lovely Skoda vRS wagon went through tyres faster than my current Model 3 Long Ranger.
My Model 3 currently over 40,000km on original tyres, probably need changing in 5 k or so. Previous petrol cars have been lucky to get 30k and same brand tyres. The reduced brake use and regen of the ev i think make a big difference.
Same here, I have had my Model Y since Nove 2022 and is close to 40k KM and have not changed my Tyres. ‘One Pedal’ driving is way to go….
Tom: You’ve been reading the misinformation based on a small handful of EV owners who boast about how many tyres they’ve worn out with their compulsive showing off the acceleration. Is that all you’ve got
That has been proven incorrect as you ay much more for a ev and charging
As the lie I charge from home solar while I drive to work during the day
If you make a comment like that you have become an idiot!
Why do you even spend time on this topic if yr just a hater/ff-apologist?
So you’re mixing with the cultists Tom? Watch out mate or you too might start to understand why the cult is gaining so many followers globally.
I have as I did not join the ev cult
More fool you
Who controls your battery china
Tom, me again, if you live off the land knitting your own garments, transport and house from hemp and gum, then you’re quite within your rights to disparage Chinese products.
The reality is, for the majority of Australians and most of the modern world, the “Made in China” moniker is on most of what you buy.
PS.Invest in hemp.
10 years ago, I bought a Subaru Liberty for $40,000 and earlier this year disposed of it for $15,000. That’s $25,000 in depreciation over 10 years or $2,500 per year.
If 1 purchase a new EV for, say,$60,000 and if it’s worth, say, $5,000 after 10 years, that’s $55,000 in depreciation or $5,500 per year The extra $3,000 per year would be more than the excess of petrol costs over electricity costs. Not to mention the inconvenience, fire risk, higher insurance and tyre costs, anxiety, etc.
I thought long and hard about buying an EV. For about five seconds!
Nice try, just hoping you don’t rely on maths for your day job.
Petrol cars are hundreds of times more likely to catch on fire. If you charge from home (like most EVA owners do) electricity cost will be about an eighth of equivalent petrol cost.Yes, having to stop and fill is an inconvenience that EV owners avoid by plug and charge overnight.Insurance was 2% higher than my previous car but the EV value is 15% higher.Whilst tyre wear is slightly higher brake wear is around 60% lower because of regen. There isn’t a ten year old EV for sale in my neighbourhood for less than 25% of original cost (a Leaf). When the conflict escalates in the Israel/Palestine area wait for petrol prices to sky-rocket and there is already evidence of this.
In about next five years EV owner may have to pay tax on their mileage, since they are avoiding fuel tax. In addition to that, they may also have to pay a great cost to dispose of the old batterie, since its radioactive material involved in the recycling process. other than that, its sales well. Although is not the car suit every lifestyle. I’ll wait and see what’s happen when El Neno become active, and we will experience very hot over 40 degrees dry weather.
Max, if you waited until those weather conditions, you might as well continue with your ICE. You take the good and the bad with evs. They will only get better with time.
Those who are afraid of evs bring up the same old issues. I agree evs were expensive before but now prices are coming down and guess what, they are complaining about depreciation……
l tested an ev, love the way it drove and bought it. I did not buy one to save money. Smooth, quiet, quick, totally fuss free. What’s not to like? All those negatives, easy to deal with and overcome, unless you need to constantly tow that horse float.
Petrol station numbers globally have been steadily declining since around 2017.We soon will see more pumps retired at existing stations to be replaced by charging bays, as is happening in Norway.
Hi Tim,
Thank you for these numbers.
The July numbers total 5,762, whereas Riz mentioned a total sales number of 6,743.
When can we get the missing numbers for July, and for some models, like the Ford Transit, even the last four months?
Hi Kamil,
It’s a slightly complicated answer due to the way we need to collect the data unfortunately as there is no single source of truth. The short answer is the total in the spreadsheet here is simply the tally from all of the models we currently have data for, whereas the Riz number is an aggregate number reported by the FCAI. Once we start filling in more of the blanks with data from individual manufacturers the gap will close.
Thanks,Tim
.
Riz and his often porky pies
A few models missing including the Mini Countryman Electric. I know they were on sale in July because I bought one. Why has BMW stopped reporting iX1 figures?
Mini Countryman is now included, with 139 sales for June, July and August.
Maybe put the total in the second column. Not easy to read on a phone (which is where most people will consume this).
And then this month, last month, back to begining of year.
Done, I’ve reversed the month order as well as suggested by Miking below, which does make it easier to read as the end of the year approaches. Thank you both for the feedback!
Thanks. Much better.
I’m glad my photo of all the BYDs that was taken from a BYD Facebook group is getting another feature. It was one of the first car transporters with BYD Dolphins in Melbourne.
Thanks Rhett, that captures the reality that is Frankston.
As an owner of an EX30, I’m glad sales are still strong. A brilliant acr.
On track to match last year, petrol car sales are to match or better electric car sales for new cars 4 to 1
Tesla’s reputation in Australia is tankinghttps://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2024-08-22/tesla-reputation-falling-as-elon-musk-alienates-ev-buyers/104229840
Imagine buying a computer with Linux OS just because Bill Gates is a dick.Idiots all of them IMO
Almost as dumb as buying a Tesla because you think Musk is the messiah .All depends on your political outlook really .Now I wouldn’t buy a Tesla for a whole load of non-political reasons , but it would also be comforting to know I wouldn’t be contributing to the coffers of a sociopath on the spectrum ,who I worry about being a danger to democracy. As far as Gates is concerned , I managed to avoid the fear that injectable nanobots are sterilizing me.
But lets face it most of us buy cars with a large dollop of emotion involved. There is no logical reason to drive around a Beemer vs a Toyota for instance.Musk has to have damaged his brand ,
That one reason is enough to switch from Windows. 😉
Does GM not sell anything in Australia?
Not much, no.
GM quit all right hand drive markets when the Commodore stopped being made (2016ish). Seeing a Cadillac her is a change of policy.
GM abandoned Australia in 2017 throwing all Holden cars and dealers under a bus. They intend to import Cadillac EVs soon. I won’t support GM after what they did. They abandoned all RH drive companies at the same time.
How did 1 Q4 sneak in there? That car isn’t even available yet.
The single sale in June was reported in the FCAI VFacts report, but I agree it is a bit odd, must be an early test or press vehicle.
Seems to be slowing and might just get to last years figures
Wow, BYD is number 1!……wait a minute…..
Driven, can we download this as a PDF? It’s a bit hard to read online as the models get obscured when you swipe to the side or want to look at the totals.
Love the revised table, easy to view on any screen, and most recent figures are up first. Thanks
Thanks for reversing the spreadsheet. Much easier to see model numbers now.
Suggestion: make a new post each time your post the latest figures rather than update an existing post, so that comments are manageable and pertinent.
Sort them newest first…
Is there a difference between delivered and sold ?Is there surplus ‘delivered’ stock held in storage ?.
Oh for the heady days of 10,000 sales per month…
They’ll come again…
NEV sales are close that now, around 9k.For BEV only 10,000/month will happen next year more consistently as new models arrive, and if the cheaper versions of M3 and MY come out.And if XPeng bring the Moma03 in 2025 and sell it for $29,990 drive away, then next year could be 20,000/month.
Look at all those Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3 killers in action!!! No, I don’t own a Tesla, nor do I have one on order – YET.It’s PROVEN, even if some people deny it, that Tesla leads the way in EV mobility. The tech is so far ahead of all the other EV manufacturers, despite peoples’ pathetic excuses about Elon Musk’s behaviour. His behaviour IS driving sales UP, not down as some dream. However, it’s still good to see the uptake of EVs in Australia in 2024.Based on the additional makes & models coming to Australia soo, 2025 is shaping up to be a very compelling year in which to UPGRADE to an EV of choice. Mine will hopefully be the refreshed Tesla Model Y. What’s your going to be?
XPeng Mona01 if it comes at 29k. If not, an MG4.Failing that, a second hand M3 if they drop further in price. This will be the most expensive car I ever bought lol.
Closing in on 100 pure BEV models in Australia. That’s a good sign.Visualising total monthly numbers and numbers as a percentage of all vehicle sales for each month gives a wavy line, but whose trend is undeniably pointed on one upwards direction.Sometime in 2025 it will hit over 10% for consecutive months and then there will be no going back.
EVs are struggling to break the 10% sales/1% registered vehicles barrier despite coming close late last year. Given that the current fleet of around twenty thousand evs would have a combined battery capacity of over 1GWh, state and federal governments should be going all out to incentivise AC charging where cars a parked during the daily solar bulge.
At 100MWh, 10% of that capacity would still be useful, which is good because ev owners would not be wanting to kill their batteries with high daily cycling if they decided to do a bit of arbitrage and sell dear when they pluged in at home during the evening peak. V2G is definitely mature enough even if us early adopters will have to replace our dumb one way chargers. Being able to make a buck by selling timeshifting services to the grid could be the final push alot of ev curious buyers need for EVs to hit 10% of registered road vehicles, approx 1GWh of
We need grid storage during the day and we need low emmission road transport. Should be a no brainer
That is a very good idea. Offer free solar 11-2pm or almost free solar on all chargers at the midday peak. No curtailment of that otherwise lost energy, tap into the profit motive for EV owners to exploit arbitrage layer in the day, costs nothing to non EV owners (or very little and indirectly), and encourages EV uptake.
Market seems to have taken a bit of a dive over Q3, are the figures similarly depressed in the ICE market. Is this something that happens over winter ?
If you’re open to suggestions a line graph with selectable brands / models would be nice.
Year on year sales for all new vehicle are down 12% for September, larger economic forces probably at work here.
October has revealed another disappointing set of (at best) flat EV sales figures. Overall (ICE + EV) the passenger vehicle market has cooled also so there are other market forces coming in to play, but it would have been good to see EV’s taking a larger market share.
Car sales have 70 Ford Mach-E for sale.More than 10% of their sales are already on the second-hand market.
126 Model Ys
It’s not very helpful to have comments in here from 3 months ago.
That’s what happens when you “update” an old article… 🙄
Perhaps create a new article each month, and “update” that as remaining figures come in?
Can we have a column next to January with the total sales for last year please?
I think EV’s maybe just a fad. I believe that conventional piston engines converted to using hydrogen (made from solar), is the fuel are the future as long as the technical problems of storing hydrogen can be overcome.
Hi Tim, This is a bloody useful resource – the best EV sales report in Australia! A very minor data suggestion – you are missing the Mazda MX-30 from your sales table. Even though it is not officially on sale anymore, Mazda has reported (through VFACTS), 108 new sales this year – including 4 in October.
